High: Great Game Play, Great interface Low: Multiplayer could have been set up better
The lack of buzz has been interesting to me; with it’s fast paced (for its game type,) its clean interface, and relatively low learning curve, I would have that Panzer Tactics DS would be front-page news. It doesn’t matter whether you have 5 minutes or ten hours, there is enough content for you in Panzer Tactics DS.
Now some have said that the learning curve for Panzer Tactics DS is a bit steep for a turn-based strategy, I call there bluff. If one simply takes the time to go through all the parts to the tutorial at the beginning of the game, you should have no problem learning how to play the game. It’s the strategy that may be hard, but that is where the fun comes in; how fun would a game do if you could fly through it with no thought? None, that’s what I thought, but I digress lets move on.
Each army has a campaign mode with a set difficulty. The German's Axis Campaign is the easy mode, the Soviet Campaign is moderate, and the Western Allied Campaign is difficult. I think its a nice change of pace that the germens are the easy campaign. If you’re easily offended when war isn’t politically correct, then stair away, otherwise enjoy the warfare.
Each Campaign has 10 missions that get progressively more complex and intense, but it is a very natural progression so you generally get better and more experience, as it slowly gets harder. Sure you might have to reply some levels, it’s very hard at times, but that’s the beauty of war, it’s hard.
Playing the campaign is very intuitive, once you figure out what everything is. Ok, wait, yeah I know that’s not right, really though it is a simple interface with easy to understand menus. It’s worth nothing the more stuff that is going on in the battlefield, the harder, yet the neater the battles get. As to not spoil the game, play the tutorial and you will understand how the campaigns work.
For a DS games the graphics are, good enough, look, this is a turn based strategy, it looks better then a board game, and that’s more then you need to expect from a turn-based strategy. Everything is clean; the fonts are easy to read at any brightness level. The special effects are surprisingly good, not needed but a neat little bonus.
Most of the reviews pan the multiplayer system calling it useless. Could it have been better? Yes, and no, see this isn’t Mario here, this is a war game, and those setting are there for a reason. So you can play the game how you want. Hot Seat Mode is far from pointless; a couple of co-workers and myself enjoyed it tremendously. Was great to pass between calls and breaks, did it take awhile on some games, yeah, but we where doing other stuff. Remember the DS is a portable game system its primary use is for on the go play.
Sadly I have to agree to an extent that the Wi-Fi mode is set up backwards. The player starts by setting up a game, picking all the details: map, number of players, starting Fame, time limits, and objectives. Then he or she waits and if another player also creates a game with those exact parameters, the game begins. Now in theory this could be great to play games with friends, you can talk on the phone set everything up and then play and know your playing each other. My personal thoughts are that’s why they did this, and thanks for that it does work well. But when I just want a fast game, it’s a headache.
The other multiplayer setting is a multi-card mode that is simpler to do. One player creates a game, with all the specific details, and other players just join it. Up to three of your friends can join you in your quest for war.
Anyway Panzer Tactics DS is top notch in our books and we look forward to future DS releases form 10TACLE Studios and Sproing. Get out there and get your copy of Panzer Tactics DS today!!!!
