Before reading what follows please keep in mind that this is the opinion of the wrtier and may not reflect that of the Eternal Gaming Network.
For years now, too many for anyone to count, violence has been a major problem in society. There are many causes of violence all of which stem somewhere in the human mind. Society also blames many things which do not deserve any blame and may influence the mind, but do not cause a person to be violent directly. The three main ones are music, video games, and movies. Not one of these forms of entertainment should, nor can they in my honest opinion, be blamed for acts of violence.
The most blamed out of those three whether it is responsible is music, especially the rap and metal genres. These genres are seen to carry a heavily violent undertone to them. Although many of the songs are violent, they are only intended as entertainment, not as a reason to go hurt or kill another human. Artists such as Slayer, Marilyn Manson, 50 Cent, and many more have been blamed for murders, beatings, rapes, and just about every other violent crime that can be named. Manson was blamed along with Korn, KMDFM, and a few others for the shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado. To this day many people in the state refuse to even recognize that these bands are made up of human beings. Protests start up every time Manson goes to Denver for a concert. Concerts by the above bands have even been canceled in the wake of the shootings. Marilyn Manson himself stated in Michael Moore's documentary Bowling For Columbine, "I did not cancel my concert because I am afraid of what may happen to me, but out of respect for the parents and families of those who lost their lives." Manson was scheduled for a concert later that year in Denver which remained canceled. He did not return to Denver until 2002. It is quite stupid for people to blame music for violence. Sure it does have psychological effects, but none of them – in my personal experience – have ever been violent.
My feelings stated on the previous, I'd like to move on to the video game thing. People still and probably always will blame the happenings at Columbine on games like Doom. Sure Doom was popular at the time and is very violent. Sure some people are influenced by violence. But what proof is there stating conclusively that in EVERY individual in the world is disturbed, upset, or altered by the violence of the game. Parents state that games like Doom and all of the Grand Theft Auto series show violence without consequence. This is very untrue. I play GTA and in that game if you cause harm to another person the cops do come after you. Sure the cops die as well, but eventually there is no way to avoid death without cheating the game. Plus since the conception of the ESRB (Electronic Software Rating Bureau) there are ways to scope how violent a game is and at what age parents should let children play the game. Many stores have even instituted a policy of not selling Mature rated games to persons under seventeen.
In my personal opinion the blame needs to be shifted from entertainment and media over to the parents of the children. Parents need not let their children play video games that are violent. Music is a different story, there are certain messages in music that need to be kept from children, but some can be sampled at an early age. Parents need to inform themselves about video games, and until either the prior happens or the current generation, who grew up with these games, matures to the point of running our great country the war between gamers, game makers, parents, lawyers, and government will continue to be waged.
