As of Friday, 8 December (Yesterday) FM Transmitters for MP3 players legal in the US
You heard it here first! But in the
run up to this Friday's change in legislation consumers need to be aware of the
legalities behind the "grey" imports.
Sure they look like legal product and they sometimes even function like
legal products but if the product is not marked with the
CE mark they are
not legal for use in the UK or Europe.
The
ce mark is
the official marking required by the European Community for all Electric- and
Electronic equipment that will be sold, or put into service for the first time,
anywhere in the European community. It proves to the user that this product
fulfils all essential safety and environmental requirements as they are defined
in the
European
Directives.
Consumers
need to look for this mark

which should be situated on both the
product and the packaging to ensure that the product they are buying complies to
the European directive and UK legislation for FM
transmission. Fundamental changes
were made to the specification of the units. One of the more important being that the
units which will be legal for use in the UK as of Friday, 8 December are lower
powered and do not have the capacity to interfere with essential services radio
transmissions.
FM
transmission products offer an easy & portable solution for users who wish
to listen to their music, podcasts, audio books or other audio files in the car
but lack a cassette player or a means to hard wire a cable. Simply connect the FM transmitter to the
MP3 player, find an "empty" frequency on their FM radio and tune the FM
transmitter into the same frequency, the unit will then broadcast the audio from
the MP3 play to the radio with high quality sound. Models vary and are available in a
universal format “ compatible with all MP3/audio players with a 3.5mm headphone
jack, iPod specific versions and a Samsung specific version. The Belkin FM transmitters are available
now and range in
price from $29.99 inc VAT to $59.99 inc VAT
