Star Trek Online (PC) - Preview

Well, if you're active in the Star Trek or MMORPG universe then you'll know that Star Trek Online has been announced, and BETA is scheduled for 2006. Information about Star Trek Online is currently very brief, so this article won't be the longest you've ever read.

Current information shows us that we will be able to play on both land and space, which is the Star Trek style. We'll be able to own ships, fight in most places, and PvP will probably be limited to duels in the Holodeck, because the only current faction is Federation.

We have no idea about what Races are playable, that's the downside, so people can't really start role-playing with their characters on forums/chatrooms yet, but nothing is really stopping them! Again not much about player housing [all we know is that you'll have quarters on the ship your stationed on] or classes.

Only current Faction aimed for release date will be the Federation, no other Empires will be included as a playable faction, missions will be both on land and in space with puzzles, combat and conversations. With ground play in Star Trek Online a more social aspect of gaming will emerge in STO, clubbing, or just talking with other players in a club over a drink.

But let's talk more about spaceships! Latest official FAQ updates reveal that the largest ships can carry hundreds of players, each with their own role to play onboard the ship. Unfortunately, for you pirates out there, no stealing other players ships, but there has been a lot of discussion on the forums [official] how it could be done, but it won't! And with a ship large enough for hundreds, we should expect quarters for most/every player on board, plus leisure facilities like a Holodeck.

Players will start off at Starfleet Academy of Earth, where they will be guided through the basics of the game, in other words, a tutorial to get you started. Once this id one, you can attempt missions of your choosing, depending on your rank, some will be bigger than others, like all other games.

But can I join the Enterprise and meet characters from the series? We are afraid you can't join the Enterprise, but if your high enough rank, or in the right place at the right time, you may encounter characters from the TV series & films.

Crafting is another aspect of Star Trek. But using it with STO will be difficult because of the replicator ability, so if you have access to a replicator, there is no need for crafting. And seeing as the only current faction is the Federation, we doubt you'll be able to venture onto undeveloped or uninhabited worlds to use your crafting skills on.

There are a lot of questions about currency. It being in the Federation, there is no need for currency, the world has united and are developing as one, but every game has to have currency, r some kind of trading system, right? Much discussion on the board has led to my favourite idea; it's not official by the way: Players are given replicator credits for them to spend how they like. Once they're gone, they will depend on others generosity, get a loan, etc You gather credits by working. Only downside is, it will eliminate the trading aspect of the game. But there are good things about it: 1. You can't be scammed. For example, your not trading for a worthless item that you've been told is valuable. 2. Less code to add to the game, less LAG I guess. 3. Don't have to waste time trading when you can be developing skills. 4. Your new items are always going to be top quality, unless you find them.

With the games expected BETA aimed at Fall 2005/early 2006, we have no real idea of graphics, because a lot can be developed in a year, so I won't comment on it until later this year when some nice screenshots are released!

About time for my final comment; Star Trek Online will be a Trekkie's game, with no current ways to fight other players outside of Holodeck simulations, no stealing ships, smuggling etc STO won't be able to draw new fans in, unless they add some more action and reality to the game.
