Story

This game takes place in year 3000 several years after the first game. The 5 major races are of the Universe are once again safe with the evil Klissans banished to distance region of space, and the ragtag team of pilots that led to their fall dibanded.

Now a new threat is once again gaing ground in the Universe and the Ragners have to be assembled once again to take out this new evil. The Dominators, completly metal machines that the Klissans built, are capturing large regions of space.

You as a human recruit come in as a Ranger and have to demolish this evil that is Dominators before they gain conplete control over the Universe.

Gameplay

You Must start off by creating a Ranger. You must first chooose a rcae out of four. The race you choice demtermines the type of vehicle you will have, the amount of money you will have, as well as the connections you will have with other planets. YOu also get to choice two items and skills to begin with.

After you have created your character you are thwon into a randomly generated Universe. This is the most difficult part of the game because of the steep learning curve and it may scare away gamers. The manual is little help ethier past the basic button commands so the gamer has to learn by his/her self.

Moving around is relatively easy all you have to do is click and press end turn or space bar. You can also stop moving by pressing the space bar and it will stop at the beginning of the next day.

You can easily land on any planet by clicking on the planet and pressing the space bar. However, the planet must be inhabited. Once you arrive on the planet you can do several things such as trade goods, buy equipment, or talk to the leader. The leader can and most likely will give you a mission to do. You can also buy system maps from them.

Missions range from gaurding a ship to delievering a package and every once in a while you get to shoot down a criminal. You will also be able to receive a strategy combat mission in which you are set up with a base and resources. The object is to capture your enemy's bases and you can do that by building custom designed robots. These robots can be remotely controlled or you can controll the robot your self which fundamentally turns Space Rangers 2 into a FPS. Then again if you do not enjoy or just plain hate these missions you can have the computer disable them and no more will ever arrive.

When you are ready to kill some Dominator's rear ends you may upgrade your ship with many different weapons, engines, and most importantly shileds (oh and gas tanks). Each upgrade will play a fundamental part within this complex Universe. The engines will obviously get you from point A to point B faster but will also last longer and be harder to damage. Now with all that horsepower you need a good gas tank to provide constant fuel on your long journeys. Shields are all around good to protect your ship from astroids to Dominators or Pirates.

Cargo space withng your ship will also play an important role and jsut like all other parts they are upgradable. These upgrades give your ship both more space and more HP. Finally the weapons. Your ship will have a primary weapon to begin with this will most likely be the Industy Laser blasting up to 15 HP damage and uses 17 units of space.

Micor Modules, which are dropped by injusred Dominators, can be used for several reasons but they must be attached to an item and once attached it can not be removed. The only micromodule I received was to protect an item from damage more or less a shiled around a particular item.

Audio

The audio for the most part is decent but after playing for several hours the music tends to repeat and can get a little tedious. The sound affects are average for a space title.

Graphics

The graphics contain both 3-D and 2-D objects and are combined rather well. The Universe background is absolutly outstanding with stars mving and astroids flying about. I actually just watched the background for about 10 minutes. The landscape 3-D could have been a little better but was alright as long as the view stayed from the top.

Overview

Space Rangers was a very complex game and a great time waster meaning I began to play and time flew by with out my knowledge of it. The excellent mixture of 2-D and 3-D graphics is also a nice plus but I belive the best feature is that it implements FPS, RTS, and Turn based strategy fundametals which made for a very exciting and enjoyable game.
