High:

Amazing graphics and sound makes you feel like you are really part of the action.

Low: The difficult controls will take a while to get used to. No multi-player/online modes.

Ever wish you could experience what it was like being in World War II? Well, this is the number one ticket to get you there. Call of Duty 3 puts you smack-dab in the middle of one of the most intense war games I have played, bombs going off every which way, bullets zooming by your head, and bodies blowing apart a couple feet away. This made me feel like I was actually apart of the war, helping out every little bit that I could. I caught myself several times just stopping and watching the action with my mouth slightly open, actually wondering if I should move forward or not. COD3 is all about intensity and quick decisions, something that real soldiers went through decades ago.

Let's tackle probably the best thing about this game, the visuals and sound. In the cutscenes the faces are extremely detailed, showing every wrinkle and cut on the soldiers faces. The lighting is beautiful, showing the extraordinary sights of this famous war. Gameplay graphics are almost just as stunning, showing the destruction of a huge building while you are in a gunfight is really hard to do, but Treyarch and Activision did a good job of doing that. The explosions were so real, making me feel like I was there, apart of the action. Adding to the beautiful graphics was the sound, which was just as good. The gun fights sound perfect, the explosions rattled my room and even the reloading sounded excellent. The voice acting was pretty solid, as the game introduced Canadian and Polish allies. Overall a great visual performance here in COD3.

The gameplay on the other hand could use a little work. This is the first installment of COD3 on the Wii, and they will probably improve a lot on the next go around but having to keep the remote pointed at the screen at all times (even through some cutscenes) is a little irritable. However, the first person feel with the remote makes this game what it is, so I can't complain too much about that. Since it was the first installment on the Wii, I was hoping for a good training mode, so learning the controls would be easier, but the training mode only lasted a couple minutes and didn't get me used to the controls at all. Not only that, but the sensitivity of where you point the remote is extremely high, you barely move the remote to the left and your soldier does a complete spin around. This makes the gunfights a little tough, I found myself in the beginning stages of the game having trouble aiming at enemy troops. There is an option to turn down the sensitivity which helped out a tad but I still found myself over-aiming. There is also a "dynamic aim" (which helps turn the gun swiftly or old-school Golden Eye style) option that you can toggle on and off, that seemed to help my aim as well when it was on but it probably depends on your playing style to determine which is better. However, once you do get the hang of it the game becomes a little easier and more enjoyable. The single shot guns were a bit of a pain in an all out gunfight, which could sometimes be your backup when you use up all your machine gun bullets. Running low on machine gun bullets will happen, especially if the enemy troops aren't using machine guns, so I would zoom in and aim before I unloaded on the Nazis. All and all it will take a couple of hours to get used to the complex controls, but once you do it turns the game in a great direction.

Another thing that the gameplay is lacking is multiplayer and online play, which isn't a surprise in the COD games. This is just a straight up single player game, no friends to help do missions, no online slaughtering, just a single player shoot out. This hurt the score, seeing as most shooting games out currently have the online mode, or even multiplayer. Having a co-op mode would have been fun, but difficult to place into this highly intense game but hopefully they will figure out a way to do that in the next COD.

Close-quarters combat is a new addition to this game, if you get to close to an enemy he might jump at you, trying to take your gun. When this happens you have to swing the remote and nun-chuck back and forth to get the Nazi off of the gun, then you have to swing the remotes in a diagonal line to deliver a finishing blow. Now, I know Activision was adding this in with hopes of making the game more realistic but it just adds a level of frustration. COD is about shooting the Nazi's to pieces, not playing who is stronger at tug of war. The actions you have to perform to get the Nazi off of the gun was really hard to pick up at first (there is a time in the beginning of the game where you HAVE to do this close-quarters combat) but once you do it just gets annoying. I would suggest to stay away from the Nazi's and just shoot them, if you do get close then make sure you hit them first, before they try to play ring around the rosy. Aside from the close combat, there are a few times where you get to drive a jeep that is being followed by a enemy tank. This was probably the most intense experiences I encountered in the game. All you really have to do is drive, sounds easy right? The tank follows you, shooting missiles in the general facility of your jeep, sending rubble and flames across your windshield. Like stated before, the explosions made me feel like I was really there and that made me want to drive really fast. The controls to drive the jeep were perfect, just hold the A button to drive, and hold the nun-chuck and remote like a steering wheel. Just turn the two like a real steering wheel and there you go. The driving was an excellent addition to the game.

Even though the controls take time to learn and there are a few annoying events in the game, the amazing visuals and realism balance it out. COD3 is a decent first person shooter, but probably the best World War II game out there just for the intense environments the game puts you in. I would recommend renting the game first, and playing it a couple days to decide if the controls are a little too much to take in. If you can get past the first couple of hours, then you are in good shape and the game will start to look a little more playable. Now troops, meet back at the Wii station in 2100 hours, grab your remotes, place your finger on the trigger, and teach those Nazi's who's in charge!
