High: Great story, great adventure, and a great price tag in the Wii Virtual Console for what you get.
Low: Almost insanely hard secrets to uncover. Probably need to use a strategy to finish the game.

There is nothing better than the sound your sword makes when you have full health in this game. This was the originator of one of the best series' that Nintendo has been able to make (besides Mario probably). This game holds the classic scenario: there is a bad guy, Ganondorf, who would like to rule the world, Hyrule, and decided that capturing the Princess of the magical kingdom, Zelda, is the best way to do that. So, you take control of the hero of Hyrule, Link and by battling Ganondorf's evil minions you work your way toward saving the world and saving Zelda at the same time. Being made in 1987, this game of course is a bit out of date, but it still holds the classic shine it did when I was a little kid. This game brought back memories, and I was so happy to beat it all over again.

The gameplay is great, putting you at the helm of swords, shields, bows and arrows, and evil a giant candle that sets things on fire! Its easy to control all of the weapons Link has too, simply place the weapon of choice (beside the standard sword) in the B button slot and you got the power. The sword is you're A button, and your shield is always there, so like I said its pretty simple to control all these weapons. As you quest through all of the different dungeons, you get more health, which are red hearts that everyone has grown to love in the Zelda series. The more hearts you get, the more damage you can take, but it also means that the enemies are probably gonna get tougher right? Of courseand this game becomes very hard, especially when you are trying to find the right dungeon to get to, or get all the hearts. I'll be honest with you, I had to use a guide again to figure out all the secrets and dungeons, and without it I would have been toast early on. There are so many random bushes you have to find and burn that it turns the game's score down a bit. Especially, the last dungeon, which is in a middle of a large boulder, how in the world was that found? Either way, the actual fighting isn't too tough and the game is enjoyable for the most part. You will find yourself almost addicted to blowing up random rocks and setting bushes on fire, just to hear that magical noise that you found a staircase to a heart container.

The graphics are still enjoyable as well, and were pretty good for its time. The different environments could have used a little work, seeing the same bush over and over and over is a little repetitious. Also, some of the monsters look a little out-dated, but remember, this game was made twenty years ago. Link even could use a little work, especially after seeing the Twilight Princess Link, but again it's to be expected. Anyway, beside the obvious the visuals for the most part still worked and weren't too difficult to look at. The sound is still right on, and like I said earlier, the sound of your magical sword is just awesome. The music gets a little old, but just as soon as I start to get sick of it, I enter a dungeon and it changes. The dungeon music fits it perfectly, and the noises of the monsters also fit pretty well as well.

The only thing this classic game is lacking is replay value. Once you figure out all the secrets, and open all the dungeons it's just not worth it to try and play it again. If you didn't use a guide for the first time through, then you are probably going to just store the game away once you beat it. However, it does have a "2nd Quest" mode, which is the same exact game, but it just rearranges where all the dungeons are and adds a little bit more difficulty to the game. It isn't worth it really, but I'm sure diehard fans have played through the 2nd Quest with no problems.

In conclusion this game is a great buy from the virtual console store, and I would recommend it, especially with its decent price tag (which I was surprised about). The gameplay is solid, besides the completely random bushes you have to burn and rocks to blow up. If you want to bring back nice memories, or just try out the game that started Twilight Princess, download this game, its worth it.
